Long Beak

I have a Wyandotte chick with a very long beak. Its doesn't seems distressed in anyway and can still eat and drink fine but if it gets any longer, it will be a problem.

None of the others have this issue and they all appear to be in good health.

They are 5-6 weeks old and have recently been wormed but haven't been dusted yet for mites/lice.

They are being fed chick starter crumbles and are outside now so they also have access to small amounts of grass/weeds etc

Does anyone know what could be the cause of this and possible solutions?

Not 100% sure what causes the over bite in the beak, but I think that you can use a nail file and file the top beak back. Just be careful not to trim too much back as it may bleed.

for the link PP,

I'll will try giving the beak a file as you said and hopefully I wont stuff it up!

Their diet is pretty good and are now getting some sun so hopefully it will just work itself out.

with the procedure just don't file too much off and keep some Betadine handy.

If you look at the beak closely you will see it is sort of like a dogs toe nail where there is section of nail & section of quick. Sometimes shining a torch under it will show the separate sections better.

As long as you don't file it back to the quick then you'll be fine & so will the chick.

Its harder on young chooks as the colour of the base is not so obvious so just be careful or it will bleed heaps as happened to me

for that. I'll make sure the first time I do this to check it out with a torch first i_like1

If I do that I'll know I'm not going to hurt the chick or damage its beak.
