Lethargic Hen

We have six hens, of which two are Lomans. The dominant one is Roast who has monstered all and sundry since we got her, but during the last two or three days she has been lethargic. All the Girls have bright red combs and are energetic and laying well but Roast has not been her usual self. I tried to check her crop and found no unusual lumpy bits, and her poo is OK, yellowish although not runny and no sign of worms. She is still eating and drinking along with the others but she is not her usual bossy self, and I found her asleep under the hibiscus hedge in the shade about two pm this afternoon, although she was right in there with the rest of them when I opened a tin of fish catfood for them about 4PM. You'd think they had never been fed the way they went for it.

I think it was Roast that laid an egg with a rough shell a couple of days ago and I'm not sure if she has laid since, although I think not.

Am I overeacting or is there an issue? Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Geoff, for the time being just keep an eye on her, make sure she continues to eat well, some hens can become lethargic when off lay and especially when about to during and after moulting.

Hi Geoff , Sorry to hear Roast is unwell , They were all wormed but it was a while ago , So would probably be worth doing again , Like PA says just watch her ( more than U allready do ) I always worry when one Of mine gets a bit dopey , and U are right it's not a good sign . Good Luck Ian

Hi, Ian. You wormed in January if my memory is correct and as you wormed all your flock in the last week or so it looks like these girls are about due again.

As I remember, you use Sykes 'Big L' in the drinking water following the instructions on the bottle, yes?

That's right "Sykes Big L" and we do the whole menagerie all on the same day I am not saying she is wormy , But it won't hurt to do them anyway , Has she picked up at all ? Or is she still Lethargic ?

CL called by today - great to meet Rosemary & Michael and have a coffee and a yarn, and, wouldn't you know it, Roast 'mounted' one of the others right in front of us, so it looks like she is back to normal.

Must've been Rosemary's magic touch .... :lol:

Anyway Roast is prettymuch back to her old self and all is good again.

Although I'll be picking up a bottle of the 'Big L' today and will worm them at the weekend.
