Golden Peasants

Hi I am thinking of purchasing a pair or trio of golden pheasants I have never kept pheasants , is there anything special I need to Know before I go jumping in the deep end , I think the breed I like are (red golden ) are they readily availably , and what feed do they eat, ??? any help would be greatly appreciated , I am sure their heaps of questions I still have to ask , IAN ,, Nanango.

Bunyanuterinie, The two most common are the Golden & Dark Throat (neck) Golden Pheasant. Both are quite readily available through-out Australia, cost from $80 - $150 a pair. They should be fed a Gain mix, you can mix you own or buy a pre mix from Pet shops Or Produce Stores (Course Grain Mix) we use Game bird breeders mix (micro pellets) This should be offered at ALL times. They will also need Greens i.e.. Lettuce, Silverbeet, Cabbage, ECT.. Also Shell Grit should be offered, Bread and Cat Biscuits.

Thanks for the info , I think the ones I saw must be the dark throated , somebody called them red golden (I think ) their used to be a lady here that bred them , do you Know of anyone in my area that breeds them, (near Kingaroy ) just so I could have a look at them , I have heard theyare very flighty .Is this true,? I have brown leghorn hens which are a bit flighty ,I also Have peacocks ,Guineafowl, and other chooks , but would like to get some pheasants , is it possible to let them freerange , after a certain amount of time, I live in the forest , and will most probably buy some if I can , thanks , I still have probably got more to ask IAN.

Hi bunyanuternie, You could try "Garwoods" on Ph: 3886 7544 they are in Narangba & they do have Goldens. They can be Flighty, like some other Pheasants but it will depend on how they were raised. As a general rule Pheasants do not free-range but having said that when we lived in Mackay we had 3 Goldens & 1 Reeves roaming the property for many years, infact the last contact with the new owners confirmed the Golden's had bred.

JT, you can put them with most Parrots & Finches but if they are a little flighty they may cause some issues. Try to buy non parent raised Pheasants they are usually a lot more Human friendly

I have a Golden c**k in a cage with four budgies and a few quail. Thy all seem to live quite happily.

I keep phasants and know quite a number of others who do but I have never heard of successfully free ranging Pheasants in Australia until PA's post above. If you do want to free range them, I'd do it very slowly and follow the advice of PA http://www.peacocksaustralia.com/PEACOCK%20FREE%20ROAMING.HTML and other websites about doing it very slowly. My experience with free ranging peafowl (seven years and never had one wander off) started with letting the male out first so he kept close to the female and then she was let out some weeks later.

thats good advise, especially about letting the male out first. We are going to get a pair of gold Pheasants from the boys at PA this year so it's good to know we can put them with the budgies, saves using another cage
