Diet for peacocks

Hi I was just wondering what is the best diet for peacocks I am thinking of getting them but not sure what to feed them. I would appreciate any advice offered.

Hi Aussie Flock. We feed game bird finishers to adults with treats of sunflower seed, corn and dry catfood mixed in. You can use turkey pellets but there are proper feeds for peas now. There are also game bird starters and growers for the appropriate ages as there is for chooks. A bit of calcium, especially for the hens in breeding season helps, and ours have access to our vegie garden. The caged ones get greens, fruit etc. Hope this helps. I assume you have the facilities to lock them up for a few months when you get them. Yours, Pam

Is it ok for peacocks to eat dog food mine pinch the dogs meaty rings and Im worried they are too big for them and they might get stuck.

Thanks Pam for the advice, I still have them caged and hope to let them free in august which will be about 6 months so I hope that is enough time. They love boiled egg and the cat biscuits and lettuce which I keep to a minimum so as not to give them diarrhea. I will let you know how they go when I set them free. Thanks again for helping

I give mine sultana's for a treat.

Mine are forever getting into the dog run and finishing off the Dry dog food to , I've never had a problem with it . I even know a Lady up here that we call 'The Peacock whisperer ' who feed hers Dog food soaked in water , I prefer the cat food for mine . But she's been successfully breeding Peacocks for alota years

I have started feeding Mine a Poultry Breeder Ration when they are laying as well. It makes for a stronger egg .

But generally I give them a Grain mix plus the catfood and the breeder ration and lots of green pick .Plus either Lucerne or Barley stubble in the runs to give them something nice to pick through . They do enjoy a bit of boiled grain in the winter months if youi want to go to that extreme .

For the basic diet Peafowl should be fed a Gain mix, you can mix you own or buy a pre mix from Pet shops Or Produce Stores (Course Grain Mix) this should be offered at ALL times in a large bowl. They will also need Greens i.e.. Lettuce, Silverbeet, Cabbage, ECT.. Also Shell Grit should be offered, Bread and Cat Biscuits every second day. You can and should add to the basic diet with supplements like Rice, Hi protein pellets & as Ian mentioned sultanas.

Can you feed them pellets as in chook pellets? I have 1 peacock and he steals the chooks layer pellets all the time but I don't know if they are ok for him to eat all the time?

I don't think it matters if he eats them but the protein isn't very high so I wouldn't use it as a basis. That is just my opinion.Cheers. Pam

Woops should have read this topic first before posting in the other topic. PA can you tell me what grains you use and the ratio as I own a produce shop & would like to put together a mix for Peacocks & Pheasants & maybe even Guinea fowls
