carnage at my place

I had just bought myself a new pied peahen the week before, lovely bird, about a year and a bit old. She was to be the wife of my pied boy...well, heres hoping anyway! I have had my birds only a short while so are all locked up still, secure pen, cyclone wire fencing, concrete trenches. I had 9, 5 boys and 4 girl, only one pied pair. My little doggy starts growling and making a fuss in his bed...we didnt twig, but my daughter went outside and there are two huge rotweilers tearing up my juvenile chooks cage. Feathers everywhere...bodies and blood everywhere... my daughter starts screaming, we run out, chasing these dogs, they were in a blood lust frenzy! My husband with the rooster dispatching machete in his hand...me with a wooden stake, screaming at these dogs. After we finally get them off our property, we go to see what happened....the newly acquired pied peahen....headless.... I look further down at the silkie tractor, ripped to shreds, a few of my silkies, dead. It was unbeleivable, total..... 17 chooks, one peahen...dead. Husband then went on a drive to see where these dogs were from, we see a fellow around the corner in his pj's looking for his dogs. We told him where theyd been, he came over (we know him) and was horrified by the mess. So, his dogs had jumped a 6 foot electrified fence to get to my birds. He is either rehoming the dogs or putting them down, they are vicious beasts...... he offered to replace my stock, which is nice of him. He is a nice man, just bad dogs ....
So, am on the lookout for a pied peahen...Im in Burrum heads, Hervey Bay area. If anyone can help, that would be great.

Oh how sad and of all the peafowl it HAD to be the new pied hen! i know how you feel, next door neigbours had a yellow kelpie and she was a horrible dog and if you went near the fence on your way down the side path she would use all her body weight and THROW herself at the fence and make all soughts of aggressive nosies and lunges, anyway one night i forgot to shut the pen door, (at the time i had 2 hens with chicks, a silkie and her 5 littlens, and a x-bred and her 5 sussex, in boxes on the floor, the silkies had only just hatched the week before, the sussex were a couple of moths older), well i woke up in the moring to go out and feed the chooks, the backyard looked like a slaughter house, all 5 sussex dead and headless, their mum also headless (and dead!), my older chooks that i had had since i was 6-7, all headless and strune acorss the lawn, i went to check on the silkies and founf the mum headless and the babies were almost unrecognisable (sorry for the graphics), i was so upset and angry, that dog also killed our beautiful free range mini lop rabbit that we had had for a number of years and that would lie happyly like a baby in your arms, and sleep at the foot of your bed, (although not while you were sleeping), anyway eventually they got rid of the dog, but not before it killed a lovely handraised duckling

well i suppose what im trying to say is that we have all been there, i would like to hear the experiences of some other members as well :?:

Sorry you lost your fowls always hard to get past that sort of trauma

That is terrible sorry you had to go through that no one should ever have too, people should keep their dam dogs to their own property it is not that hard to do

At least he is doing something about the dogs which is good as it will not happen again but it does not bring back your birds I am sorry you had to go through this and I hope it never happens again

apparently dogs arent being put down now!!!!! He went and bought some type of electric underground zapping wire and if the dogs get close to the wire which is inside the fence line, they get buzzed, the closer they get, the stronger the buzz, until its a full on zap. I want to know what happens if there is a power failure or he dosnt bother to replace the batteries on the dogs collar?????

He did say if THIS dosnt work they will get put down....but that means that there is a future of possible dog attacks on my birds again!

I still cant rest easy at night.

In that case I would bill him for the losses you had, just to reinforce that he cannot let it happen again or it will cost him more money and maybe report it to the local ranger?

SORRY to hear the bad news. Some of us have had the same or similar experience in the past. by law you are entitled to destroy any dog that comes on your property don't know your exact property details but from my past my neighbours usually react very quickly to notifacation that thier dogs will be shot on sight if found on my property and I expect the same if my dog is on their property, we live in the country and people understand dogs just cannot roam or if they do they are accountable. WE ARE ALL ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR PETS WHAT EVER THEY MAY BE
