2007 Breeding Season

Well it's that time of the year, the Peafowl are coming into season. Most of our Peacocks started displaying about 4 weeks ago with most in full voice and courtship display. A few hens are quite receptive so we should start to see eggs by Sept/Oct. What about everyone else?

well my peacock started to show off in the middle of winter but to days ago he tried to mate with one of the girls, so hopefully it all goes well.

I hope all breeders have a successfull season.
Maybe even have some young available for sale closer to me this year

Up here in the Sth Burnett mine peacocks have layed there first eggs earlier then normal but could be because of the little rain we had back in July. Have found A guinea fowl already sitting on 14 eggs so expect my first babies there in a couple of weeks so all is go up here.

I keep checking, activity but no eggs. Expect them mid Sept possibly. We had such a disaster that I have been unable to tell anyone except Janb until now. While we were away our darling Napoleon went missing. We searched the property and cannot find one trace of a fox attack so can only assume he has been chased by dogs and got taken somehwere else or worse still, stolen. We were about to sell a this year's son and a last year's son but we are going to keep one of them. We still have our two Blues brothers and pied genes around but we miss him so much. He was our star, so quiet and lovely. I feel sick all the time thinking about it. I keep hoping he will turn up or someone will ring. Sorry to be so sad. Pam

We are genuinely sorry to read about Napoleon, we can only hope he did survive and in time may return. Many breeders get very attached to their birds and any loss is taken very personally because they are part of the family.

It's as bad as losing our dog. It gives you a teeny teeny insight into what it must be lie for someone whose child goes missing, just going over and over what could have happened. He was one of the joys in our daily life. P

Pam, that is awful he was a great example of a peacock especially a pied one.

Breeding season, my with and blue boys are working double time on the displays, and the split white and pied not so much. Even my 10 month dark pied boy is displaying, and he does not even have a train at all!!.

The girls seem to checking out the nest I made for them (old 200l drums) I will put some new straw in their pens next week and see if they want to build a nest.

My Guinea Fowl are laying 1/50 egg a day, that is 1 egg out 50 female guinea fowl. So they have not got serious yet. But I did find a female sitting on 20 eggs (all chook eggs) in the shed, but she was dead, spider bite I think.

I lost a sitting goose this week to a spider bite, so I am now looking around for spiders and spraying surface spray on any spider webs. This is new this year as normally the guinea fowl eat all the spiders.

I have sold all my pheasants, I needed the pens for the peafowl, when I build the purpose built pens for the peafowl next year, I will get them back, a friend has them, and has promised to keep some for me.

Gosh BB, never heard of spider bites!! Speaking of dead birds, one of our little black silkies died. She had never thrived, and one of the others laid an egg on top of her poor fluffy little body. It was so cute but I thought people would think it was too gross for a photo. I was actually wondering if Napoleon had turned up at any of the auctions. As I said, we can find not a trace of him. Our two young males are displaying non stop, the white boy in paticular. They have been going for months.... practice??? If you hear of a pied male being sold I would appreciate you emailing me, as I have some money from a birthday that I could use. Thanks. Pam

We hope he returns too, very upsetting for you Pam. Sounds like you are going to be very busy Broken bird.
