Peafowl and wandering question.

I have 3 peacocks on 4 acres and have very busy road in front and behind the property I have found it acts like a barrier to keep them from wondering to far they are frightened of the road and stay well and truly clear. The closest I have ever seen them is about 50m and even then they were very nervous and ran home quick smart when a truck thundered past

I am always a spanner in the works... thinking of changing my name to "Spanner!" Frankly I won't sell birds to people who live on busy roads and who don't have full co-operation of the neighbours etc. As I always say, we are selling animals here, not commodities, and if they are going to cause grief to anyone then don't go there. I often have to rehome birds for people because of all these problems. Have you considered the possibility of them causing an accident when they take off across the road??? I think you are obviously a caring person who has seriously thought of these problems so maybe if you really want to go ahead do the big pen thing rather than free ranging them but take the noise factor into account. Talk to your neighbours first??? Just a thought. And I don't want to get jumped on by people thanks. It is just my opinion and no-one has to take any notice of it so hold your fire!!

Good advice Pam and your not alone I have said no to people because of their location.

I have said no too only after they have described their pens YUK!!! I am a little fussy with who gets my stock

They have to pass an examination to get past me!!! They prob go off and buy from someone else but most people are grateful that I told them the difficult things about peacocks and quite a few have chosen not to go ahead and thanked me for it or have built fabulous pens to house them. I always sell with the stipulation that they can bring them back and get their money back or if they are too far away I will help them sell the birds. In some ways peas are more difficult than dogs to keep because of the impossibility of containing them if you free range them. And there is the noise!!! We are so lucky where we are.

There is a great design for a pen at http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsh ... viary/1867. We used this plan and raised the roof by another few metres. We are actually going to divide the pen lengthways in half so Mums and babes can have separate spaces. If you build this to house your originals before you free range them you will never regret it. We wish we had used even smaller gauge wire as the flying rats ( sparrows ) can still get in, but you can go on and use the pen to house your littlies. It soon pays for itself. It did cost a lot initially though.

Thanks for the honest replies everyone. The reason we don't have guinea fowl here is just that, I'd hate for them to be killed on the road. I wouldn't get a peacock unless we had a pen set up for them. I don't have any neighbours so there wouldn't be an issue with noise at all.

It’s a myth they need to free range I have them in big cages and there happy, it's no different to any bird really they will adapt. I hope you do get some peafowl they are fantastic poultry to have and to watch.

Hubby has intentions of enclosing a large concreted area we have down the back and turning it into a bird aviary, I think a peacock would be very happy in there.
