best age to buy a peacocks

I think the younger the better but 3 weeks is just too young.

Because they attach to their new ranch quicker than an adult. The youngest I sell them at 3 months wich I feel is the youngest the better doen't matter what color.

Here that is a bit young I reckon as they are still under the mother's wing at night at 3 months here. At 4 months they are really well grown and I feel confident that they won't get sick by then. The bonding thing depends on so many things I reckon eg whether the buyer has other peacocks, the sex of them, whether they get a fright on "let out day," etc. I sold a 5 year old male to a lovely lady who inadvertently let him escape as she went to take him to his pen. He flew off but luckily she had other peacocks and he returned and is a treasured member of the family. Wouldn't recommend it though! P

We purchased ours from PA at 8 months and never had any problems when we let them out after 6 months. They were also very tame and loved the kids. I think the minimum age of 6 months that PA recommends is right and it certainly worked for my family. I can't imagine life without them now, they are much loved family members now.

Yes, I have sold mature males at 5 and 6 years and as long as the people lock them up for a few months there has never been a problem. Feeding a high protein diet is essential to keep them around too I believe. P

Hi Mark, from "Bimbadeen" my best advice is to buy young birds, bond them by having a large enclosure and having the will power to leave them locked up for at least three months especially the boys most girls will hang around other peafowl in a week or two then they can roam free, but the most important part i believe to owning a free roaming peafowl is spending time at a early age, an old bird has different ideas, for example how was the bird kept previously! We as a buyers dont really know what enviroment they just left But in the country if you have peacocks more importantly peahens a FOX is a worry because on a nest without protection they will just sit on the eggs and wont move and that is there demise. So from my observations a hen will lower her wings down her side and make a sound like "glock" when she shows signs of laying i believe it is a good time to entice her into the enclousre with food or just by chance as she freely enters closing the door behind her, she will lay her eggs inside over the coming days for you to monitor if the eggs are laid everywhere and she didnt like the materials you thought she might brood in well by an incubator if you wish to breed. if you just want a peacock on its own i cant help you. I think it pays to talk to the best as I found out the hard way. I first got peacocks 3 years ago from a local that told me to keep them caged for 2 to 3 week then let them out, he was wrong, all disappeared including the females. I then contacted Peacocks Australia and arranged to buy 2 pairs and to get sound, proven advice from the best in Australia. It payed off in so many ways I now have peacocks walking around my place all happy and I now know allot more than I did thanks to Peacocks Australia. My advice is to contact Peacocks Australia and do everything they tell you and you will be so pleased you did.
